Hormones, dirt, oil and other factors can contribute to acne. Nothing can get you down faster than acne.
Acne remedies are a dime a dozen out there and there's not a blanket therapy that will always work for every person, but understanding why you can get acne is key to helping to treat it.
First, acne is bacteria stuck in the pore and because dirt, oil and dead skin can sometimes trap that bacteria, it will begin to fest and form into a pustule. The first step is to clean away the debris and one of the best solutions for this is Salicylic Acid, a Beta-Hydroxy acid which help to remove the dead skin and clear the debris from the pore. Plus, salicylic acid is made from aspirin, so it has the added benefit of reducing the irritation and inflammation.
Second, acne is anaerobic, meaning it thrives and festers when there isn't any oxygen. To oxygenate the pore, we treat with a Benzyl Peroxide, which can come in different dose. This is step that you need to use caution with, as Benzyl Peroxide can leave the skin very dry... which can sometimes cause a dry acne to outbreak. To avoid this, we recommend just spot treating with our Benzyl Peroxide products.
Third, even though you have acne, its still very important to moisturize and nourish the skin. There are two types of acne: oil and dry acne. In our Colorado climate, we typically see dry acne, but because acne is associated too often with oily skin, people will over treat and over dry their skin, which leads to this dry acne. The oil glands begin to overproduce oil to combat the dryness and the overproduction of oil will clog the pore and trap the bacteria. You still need to moisturize the skin with properly pH balanced and non-comedogenic (don't clog the pores) products to prevent this cycle.
